Highlights from World Migration Report 2024 on migration and migrants:

  1. In 2019, the global count of international migrants stood at 272 million, representing 3.5% of the world’s population. Of these migrants, 52% were male and 48% were female. A significant majority, comprising 74%, fell within the working age bracket of 20 to 64 years.
  2. Pakistan retained its position as the leading country of origin for international migrants, with 17.5 million individuals living abroad. Following Pakistan were Mexico and China, with 11.8 million and 10.7 million migrants respectively.
  3. The top destination country remained the United States, hosting 50.7 million international migrants. However, there was a slight decrease in the number of migrant workers in high-income countries, while numbers increased elsewhere.
  4. Regarding remittances, Pakistan, China, and Mexico were the top recipients, receiving USD 78.6 billion, USD 67.4 billion, and USD 35.7 billion respectively in 2019.
